The Copa America is fast approaching, and many of the big South American teams are preparing for the tournament. While the Argentina national team seems to be the heavy favorite to win the Copa America, since they are the World Champions and the Copa America holders, some fans are aware of the powerful Uruguay national team. They are also in big contention to win the tournament, but they will not count on their legendary player. Uruguay will not play with a football legend who played with Neymar Jr. and Kylian Mbappé in Paris Saint Germain. Edison Cavani has announced that he will retire from the Uruguay national team and will not be playing in the Copa America 2024. The Boca Juniors striker announced on his social media pages that he will no longer represent the Uruguay national team. Cavani scored 58 goals in 136 appearances for Uruguay and is the second top goal scorer of the national team.
Cavani wrote a long letter that was dedicated to the fans of Uruguay. The Boca Juniors striker wrote, “My beloved Celeste, I just want to thank you for every lesson you gave me under your process. I won’t take long. Today my words are few but profound. Thanks to every single person who was a part of this road over the years. I was and always will be blessed to have worn this jersey representing what I love most in this world, my country.”
Cavani continued and eventually told the world that he is retiring from the national team. Cavani said, “They were without doubt so many wonderful years. I have a thousand things to say, tell and remember, but I want to dedicate today to this new stage of my career and give everything I’ve got to where I’m supposed to be now. I have decided so step aside but with my heart still beating, as it was when it was my turn to take to the pitch wearing this beautiful jersey. Sending a strong embrace to all of my fans.”
Edison Cavani’s last appearance with Uruguay
Cavani made his senior debut with the Uruguay national team in 2008. His last appearance for the Uruguay national team was in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in a 2-0 win against Ghana. He played in all three group stage games in the 2022 World Cup, where Uruguay were grouped in Group H as they finished third with 4 points; Portugal and South Korea advanced to the knockout stages.
