FANS loved Erling Haaland’s instant reaction when Cristiano Ronaldo hailed himself as the world’s best goalscorer.
The Manchester City striker responded to Ronaldo’s boast at the 2023 Globe Soccer Awards with a look every bit as lethal as his finishing.
Cristiano Ronaldo was in a chirpy and cheeky mood at the awards ceremony
Erling Haaland gave a look that could generously be called deadpan
Al-Nassr frontman Ronaldo, 38, was clearly proud to officially be last year’s top goal-getter in senior leagues.
The Manchester United legend notched 54 in 59 games – ahead of Kylian Mbappe’s 52 in 53 matches, Harry Kane’s 52 from 57 and Haaland’s 50 in 60.
And beaming Ronaldo told the awards audience in Dubai: “I was the best goalscorer this season.
“Imagine beating young animals like Haaland… I’m proud. And I’ll be 39 soon!
“I like when people doubt me again and then I’m successful. I don’t get affected by the criticism.”
There was a cheeky smile on the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s face.
But Haaland, 23, responded with a blank look that might have been mistaken for a death-stare – had he been looking at anyone in particular.
And in fact the Norwegian poacher quickly broke into a slightly happier smirk.
Haaland consoled himself by picking up the award as best player
Meanwhile, Ronaldo added more self-praise as he joked: “I still look good, so I’m proud.”
Haaland was named best player overall, so he was already the main man.
But viewers applauded Ronaldo right away for his response to that choice.
Before the announcement, the former Juvenius frontman kept pointing to Haaland. When the award was officially announced, the crowd erupted in celebration.
One fan said of Ron’s behaviour: “No wonder he’s idolized by every youngster.”
Another wrote: “Cristiano saying Haaland deserves it” – followed by a heart emoji.
And a third even claimed: “This is the difference between him and Messi.”
