Andre Onana could return to Manchester United to find that he is no longer the first choice goalkeeper as the Red Devils plot a bid for Ivan Provedel.
United are without regular first choice stopper Onana for the time being as he is on Africa Cup of Nations duty with Cameroon. Onana has come under criticism at Old Trafford since joining from Inter and Erik ten Hag is reported looking to bring in an alternative already. Quotidiano Sport reports Provedel has emerged as a candidate for the Premier League club.
According to the report, United could make a bid for the 29-year-old in the January transfer window to ensure they have a quality option to rely on. The Italian has impressed at Lazio and made headlines across Europe this season when he scored a last-minute equalizer in his team’s Champions League match against Atletico Madrid.
Provedel joined Lazio from Spezia in 2022 and signed a five-year contract with the Serie A side. He has played 72 games so far for the Rome club and has conceded 70 times, keeping 32 clean sheets along the way.
Unless they bring in a new option, United will have to rely on Tom Heaton to play in goal – while 25-year-old Altay Bayindir waits on the bench – until Onana returns from his campaign in Ivory Coast with Cameroon.
