Recently, as an analyst of the English Premier League, former striker Alan Shearer proposed the squad he considers to be the best in the current 2023/24 season of English football.
The most notable part is the attack when Shearer selected up to 4 strikers but eliminated last season’s top scorer, Erling Haaland. Instead he chose Ollie Watkins to play up top, supported by Jarrod Bowen. Mohamed Salah holds the right wing and Son Heung-min plays opposite.
In the middle, Shearer chose two midfielders who stood out this season: Arsenal’s Declan Rice and Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz. This set is an irreplaceable key for their team.
The centre-back pairing includes Virgil Van Dijk and William Saliba while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Destiny Udogie occupy the right and left flanks respectively.
And finally, standing in the wooden frame is Tottenham goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario. The rookie from Empoli showed a quick integration, having kept 5 clean sheets since the beginning of the season, only less than Allison Becker of Liverpool.
Going back to Haaland’s elimination, perhaps the Man City superstar’s performance this season is not enough to impress Alan Shearer. Compared to the same period last year, Haaland scored 6 fewer goals in the Premier League (14 compared to 20), due to being sidelined due to injury since mid-December.
The good news for Man City fans is that their number 9 recently returned to training. With Kevin De Bruyne just reappearing, this duo promises to disrupt the Premier League for the rest of the season.
