Erik ten Hag has reported not losing the Manchester United dressing room, but he must make swift an improvement to win over some disgruntled players.
The Athletic has revealed that, while there remain deep concerns at United, Ten Hag is yet to lose the support of all of his squad. The report details how there are a number of players who hold grievances – some more legitimate than others – but ten Hag has not lost the support of the entire group. Yet, if results don’t improve quickly, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see that support wither away.
To put it simply, United have been poor this season. Sat eighth in the Premier League and out of the Champions League and Europe altogether, it has been a dire campaign.
However, there are deeper complexities that run throughout the club – as the new INEOS investment group are set to untangle. Indeed, some disgruntled players have taken issue with the current running of the club.
Ten Hag’s side has been criticized for the manner in which they have played in one of their worst calendar years in history and results must improve, but the Dutchman has been afforded some time for now.
2023 was one of the worst years in United’s history, losing 21 games. Only in 1930 (28), 1972 (25) and 1921 (24) did the club lose more games in a calendar year.
He may not have lost the dressing room yet, but Ten Hag has serious work to ensure he doesn’t in the near future. With the departures of several unhappy players this window, including Jadon Sancho, the United boss will hope getting rid of some distractions will turn his fortunes around.
