Man Utd has ended its journey in the European Cup this season. Early elimination causes the club to lose a large amount of money.
After losing to Bayern Munich in the final round of the Champions League group stage, Man Utd had to rank at the bottom of Group A. That caused the club to be eliminated from Europe’s number one club-level tournament. Not only that, they cannot participate in the Europa League.
Not being able to reach the 1/8 round of the Champions League caused Man Utd to lose 9.6 million euros in prize money. They also lost 10.6 million euros for the quarter-finals, 12.5 million euros for the semi-finals, 15.5 million euros for the finals and 20 million euros for the championship.
In total, a club crowned Champions League receives 52.6 million euros. Of course, it is difficult to say that Man Utd lost the above amount of money, but certainly, they will lose a large amount of money. In addition to losing 9.6 million euros in prize money, they also suffered significant losses in television royalties, ticket sales, commercial activities or advertising contracts.
Similarly, if they compete in the Europa League, Man Utd can receive 500,000 euros for a ticket to the play-off round and 16 million euros if they win.
After losing to Bayern Munich, Man Utd went down in history in a sad way. They became the first English club to concede 15 goals in the Champions League group stage. The Red Devils also became the first English club to finish bottom of the table twice in Europe’s number one club tournament (2005/06 and 2023/24).
After the sadness in the Champions League, Man Utd will face Liverpool in the Premier League this weekend. They did not have the services of two defensive pillars, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, due to injuries in the match against Bayern Munich.
