Neymar’s reaction to seeing that his favorite team was relegated
Neymar and Santos
One of the historic teams in Brazil has been unexpectedly relegated. Santos suffered its first relegation in the entire history of the Brazilian league. This is a team with a lot of history in football, where Pele and Neymar played and shone, won historic cups and much more. However, the club’s current situation was not the best and it ended up being relegated once and for all.
With relegation, Santos ended up leaving a select group of clubs that had never played in the 2nd Division, which now only make up Flamengo and Sao Paulo, and entered another unwanted group: that of the greats that suffered the fall. Among the teams from Rio de Janeiro, Vasco was relegated to Serie B four times (2008, 2013, 2015 and 2020). Botafogo did it three times (2002, 2014 and 2020), while Fluminense suffered it in 1996* and 1997.
Neymar, a footballer for Saudi Al Hilal, lamented on Wednesday night the relegation of Santos, the club where he started his career, to the second division of the Brazilian league. “Saints always Saints. We will smile again,” the forward wrote on Instagram, in a publication with a black background and the team’s shield. Santos, in which great Brazilian football idols such as Neymar and Pelé have played, were defeated 1-2 by Fortaleza and for the first time in their 111-year history they will not compete in the main category.
Fires after descent
“Vila Belmiro becomes a scene of war after relegation,” headlined the newspaper Lance. The riots spread to the outskirts of the stadium, where incidents against the police broke out. Local media reports indicate that at least four buses were set on fire and several cars on the stadium block suffered the same fate.
