Manchester City’s Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has been voted Premier League player of the season by the Football Writers’ Association (FWA), EFE news agency reported.

Haaland won the vote by a wide margin after a superb first season in English football in which he has scored 51 goals so far. He received 82 per cent of the votes.

In second place was England international Bukayo Saka and in third place was Norway’s Martin Odegaard, both representing Arsenal.

In the women’s category, Chelsea’s Australian striker Sam Kerr won the award to become the first to retain the accolade. She achieved twice as many votes as Rachel Daly (Aston Villa), while third place went to Lauren James (Chelsea).

Haaland and Kerr will receive their respective awards at a gala event at a London hotel on Thursday, May 25, following the conclusion of the English football season.

Erling Haaland’s record-breaking season

In 34 Premier League games so far, Haaland has scored 35 times to break the Premier League record for goals in a single season, and he still has four more games to go to add to that tally.

Andy Cole and Alan Shearer held the previous mark with 34 goals. Cole did it in the 1993-94 season with Newcastle United, and in the 1994-95 season his tally was equaled by Shearer, then with Blackburn Rovers.

In total, Haaland has 51 goals to his name with 11 goals in the Champions League and six more in the FA Cup.

The 51 goals also surpass the all-time record for a Premier League player, which was held by Ruud van Nistelrooy and Mohamed Salah with 44 goals.
