Although there have been many conflicts over the past few months, Man United has not completely closed the door on the possibility of retaining Jadon Sancho. According to Football Insider, Man United will delay a decision on Sancho’s future until the summer. The reason is because the club’s leadership believes that this issue is closely related to the future of coach Erik ten Hag.
Ten Hag is yet to sign a new contract with the club after a tumultuous season. His current contract will expire at the end of the 2024/25 season, while Sancho is under contract with Man United until 2026. Therefore, Sancho can only return to Old Trafford if Ten Hag is fired.
Sancho’s career at Man United seemed to be over after he was loaned back to Borussia Dortmund last month. Man United spent £73 million to sign the English attacker from Dortmund in the summer of 2021. However, two years later, he was dropped from the first team due to conflicts with Ten Hag.
Ten Hag left Sancho out of the squad in Man United’s 3-1 loss to Arsenal in September citing poor training awareness. Sancho has publicly denied this and said that he is being turned into a “scapegoat” by Ten Hag for Man United’s poor start to the season.
After refusing to apologize to Ten Hag and his teammates, Sancho was banned from using the first team’s facilities at Carrington training ground and was forced to train with the U21 team. After three months of not playing, Sancho was loaned to Dortmund until the end of the season.
Returning to Germany, Sancho showed impressive form with two assists in the first 3 matches. However, Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl recently admitted that it will be difficult for the Bundesliga club to sign a long-term contract with Sancho.
This makes Sancho’s future even more uncertain. He can return to Man United if Ten Hag is fired but can also continue to stay with Dortmund or move to another club.
