This £64 million summer contract had to wait until December to score his first Premier League goal for Man United. He is behind Hannibal Mejbri, Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof in the scoring charts. For now, however, he is flying high and only Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay have scored more Premier League goals for Man United this season.
Hojlund has scored 7 times in his last 6 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions and his scoring form has played an important role in helping them rise. After a 3-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday, Erik ten Hag’s side climbed to sixth place in the Premier League and are just six points behind Tottenham and eight behind fourth-placed Aston Villa.
Man United is still the team scoring the least in the top 10 but they are scoring more regularly. They scored three goals against both Aston Villa and West Ham United. The Red Devils scored four times in the late win over Wolves and they scored twice in the draw with Tottenham. Of those 12 goals, Hojlund was directly involved in 6 goals. The 21-year-old scored the decisive goal against Villa. He scored and assisted in the match against Tottenham and repeated that achievement against Wolves. After that, Man United’s number 11 opened the scoring against West Ham.
The young Danish striker had a similar record last season for Atalanta. Before entering the new year (2023), he had only one goal and one assist in Serie A. From January onwards, this versatile attacker has scored another 8 goals and 3 assists create your list. Hojlund seems to be one of those players who needs a bit of time to adapt to his new surroundings, but once the goals land at his feet, he will be an asset to his team.
However, Hojlund never doubted himself. Speaking to Sky Sports after the win over West Ham, he said: “I always believe in myself, the most important thing is the rhythm. You score one goal, then two goals, get a little bit of momentum and started to link up with his teammates. About a month ago, Garnacho and I had an interview on the field and he said there was a lot of talk about us not scoring enough goals but we were still young.”
Hojlund’s latest goal is something only a confident striker could score. He breezed past Nayef Aguerd, a centre-back valued at £60m, with ease before firing the ball into the bottom corner as if taking part in a finishing exercise. Obviously, coach Ten Hag has nothing to complain about: “He is a great personality, always moving forward. And you see, now the team is better and more stable, we serve the front line better and that he started to score goals. You see something developing with Rashford, with Garnacho, with Bruno at the back, as well as other players in the second and third lines. So Hojlund will come more in a position to score.”
